Why?

I'm self-conscious about my bite and my smile, but that's not why I'm putting myself thought this surgery. I'm doing it because I want to have a normal life again. My jaw problems interfere with everyday life and I can't do it anymore.

I have two teeth in my mouth that touch. I have been using those teeth, and only those teeth to "chew" food for over a year now. My muscles are tired of compensating for my jaw misalignment. I can't eat or even open my mouth without pain. I can't cry or get stressed out because then the pain cripples me. I know it's major surgery and it won't be fun and it's going to hurt. However, I can't continue to live like this.

I'm excited to be only 5 weeks from surgery, but trying to figure out how I'm going to be prepared in that time! I'll be home for Thanksgiving, then back to school for the last week of classes and finals (I'll only be back for a week and a half!), then back to Denver. I get to Denver on Dec 9, have my surgical hooks put on (thank you wonderful orthodontist for not putting them on at Thanksgiving and making me deal with them while trying to study for/take final exams!) and my molds and x-rays taken on the 10th, pre-surgical physical and blood work on the 11th, getting my teeth cleaned on the 14th, final pre-surgical appointment on the 15th, then into the hospital early on the 16th for surgery!!

Much luck to anyone who is having their surgery in the next few days! Wishing everyone a speedy recovery.

  1. Wow. Your underbite is much like mine. Do you have an open and crossbite though? I can't really tell. Your surgery is really creeping up on you. It'll be here before you know it. Just remember stay calm and relaxed, and know that God will help you through it. :) I can't wait to be able to eat foods like pizza and fruits with one solitary bite! How about you? :) Also, are you getting top and bottom jaw surgery or just bottom? And are you going to be wired or rubber-banded? Just wondering. :) If you go to my blog and check out some of the blogs I follow you will find a TON of helpful and reassuring information! I hope you have a great recovery with little pain! I'll will keep you in my prayers. :)

  2. That picture was from a year ago, and I was forcing my bottom jaw back for the picture. It was worse than that and the braces have made it even more apparent!

I can't wait to be able to go the the MP (I live in the dorms, and that's our cafeteria) with my friends without worrying about what I will be physically able to eat. Last night I sat and ate a cookie while they all had dinner then I came back to my room and made myself mac and cheese.

I don't know if they've classified my bite as open...though most (all but 2) of my teeth don't touch! I do know that my upper jaw is narrower than my lower, so they're calling it a crossbite.

I'm having them both done, maxillary advancement and expansion and mandibular retraction. I'mm have a splint in for 6 1/2 weeks after the surgery (I'm going home at the end of January to have it taken out), so I won't be tightly banded.

I've been reading blogs all day (instead of studying for my 3 exams this week...eek!) and have deffinetly found some great information!

I look forward to the upcoming weeks and months, ggod luck to you also!
